The Origin Story of LayerDrone
In 2022, Spexi began developing blockchain technology as a more efficient and scalable way to build our two-sided drone imagery network. Since then, we’ve been testing and refining this approach–primarily using blockchain to verify imagery contributions.
Now, in 2025, we are spinning out this technology and its accompanying stack into a new unaffiliated mission–driven foundation: LayerDrone Foundation, which will steward the LayerDrone Network as a public utility.
We understand that LayerDrone Foundation plans to introduce a native token to incentivize drone operators to contribute high-quality imagery to the network. Spexi is proud to be the founding core contributor to LayerDrone. We’ve developed applications that directly interface with the LayerDrone protocol, and intend to officially adopt the LayerDrone token to power these platforms.
Additionally, Spexi is the first value-added reseller of LayerDrone data. We’ve built advanced visualization tools that allow our customers to interact with drone imagery in powerful ways. To access imagery from the LayerDrone Foundation, we understand Spexi will need to pay in tokens–reinforcing the utility of the token.
LayerDrone is an open network and protocol, enabling anyone to contribute, access, and build on its imagery datasets, provided they follow established standards and guidelines. This new model marks a significant step forward in decentralized aerial data sharing and utilization.
