Sooke is a picturesque coastal town located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Known for its stunning natural beauty, Sooke offers a perfect blend of rugged coastline, lush forests, and vibrant marine life. The District of Sooke employs 100 people to help their community grow and thrive.
The District of Sooke has been striving to obtain higher-quality, up-to-date aerial imagery to enhance its mapping. They needed a dependable solution to capture high-resolution, near-real-time imagery for specific projects, as other providers were unable to meet their standards. The absence of suitable imagery often necessitated time-consuming site visits. Traditional satellite imagery was insufficient due to low image quality and outdated data, especially in rural areas like Sooke. Similarly, fixed-wing airplane captures were unable to deliver aerial imagery within the necessary timeframe.
And to be able to visualize that area within the same day that it was requested, [the collection of the aerial imagery] was faster than anticipated.
Led by Mitch Bate, Head of Geographic Services, the team partnered with Spexi to access readily available, high-quality aerial imagery. When more recent data was needed, Spexi’s platform delivered updated imagery in an impressively short 12-hour turnaround, enabling the District of Sooke to act quickly and efficiently. For their project, the aerial view of the site was significantly more valuable than an in-person visit, as it provided comprehensive perspectives, including top-down views of the properties to assess land-use change and project development.
